LA HELVECIA by Michele Gentry recounts the history of a small settlement in Quindío, Colombia, and its role in the spread of evangelical Christianity. The story begins with Daniel Barrios and Nicasia Gutiérrez, a couple who, due to harsh agricultural conditions in Cundinamarca, migrated with their family in 1914 to fertile lands in Quindío. Settling in an area later known as La Helvecia, they and other families built a thriving agricultural community. Over time, La Helvecia evolved into more than a farming settlement. A small store and a school were established, making it a focal point for the region. In the 1920s, the introduction of the Gospel by colporteur Segundo Pazmiño led to the formation of an evangelical congregation. The settlement became a hub for Protestant expansion, leading to the construction of a church and the integration of the community into the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. However, political and religious tensions during La Violencia (1948–1953) forced the community to disperse. Many fled to Armenia and Cali, where they continued their evangelical mission, establishing churches and influencing new congregations. Despite La Helvecia’s physical disappearance, its spiritual legacy endured through the people who carried its teachings and traditions into other regions of Colombia.
