If you think a Christian can't love Holy Scripture and call out long-held misconceptions at the same time, Virgil Todd has something to show you. What we know as the Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament / Hebrew Scriptures was not all written by one prophet named Isaiah. It wasn't even written as one book. Dr. Virgil Todd saw that the writings of the unknown prophet of the Exile had long been overshadowed by Isaiah (8th Century BC), so he rectified that by shining a spotlight on "Second Isaiah". The work of this prophet, says Todd, must be interpreted eschatologically.
Dr. Virgil H. Todd was born in Jordonia, Tennessee on June 22, 1921, and went to be with God on October 21, 2014. He married Irene Rolman on September 21, 1941. Dr. Todd was an honor student at Bethel College, where he received his B.A. degree. He also received his B.D. degree from the Cumberland Presbyterian Seminary (now Memphis Theological Seminary), M.A. degree from Scarritt College, and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Todd was an ordained minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, and he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the denomination in 1986. He was named Professor Emeritus of Memphis Theological Seminary in 1987 at the time of his retirement as Professor of Old Testament Studies, a position he held for thirty-three years and two years as adjunct professor. His other books include A New Look at an Old Prophet and Biblical Eschatology. It is with the kind permission of his estate that the Historical Foundation reprints this book, Prophet Without Portfolio.
