These are the author's personal remembrances of and experiences with people whose lives had quality. She begins with the essay she wrote for her freshman English assignment at the University of Alabama. The assignment was to write her "philosophy of life". She chose to focus on Old Jersey, a cow on her family's farm near Scottsboro, Alabama. From there we meet people, places, and other animals who had a lasting effect on the author.

This is the story of one "country girl's" life, from childhood to retirement home, with college, marriage, children, traveling, a career, widowhood, and going blind in between.
